Council Candidates to Discuss Issues at Forum
FOLEY – Candidates for contested Foley City Council seats in the Aug. 26 municipal election will have a chance to discuss the issues in a forum scheduled Aug. 14.
The forum will take place at the Foley Civic Center at 6 p.m. The event is organized by the South Baldwin Common Sense Campaign.
Candidates will have a time limit to answer questions asked by a moderator.
Each candidate will have three minutes to make an opening statement, 90 seconds to answer each question, 30 seconds to answer a follow-up question if asked and 90 seconds to make a closing statement.
Audience members will be asked not to applaud or make other responses during the forum.
Four of the five City Council seats are contested with at least two candidates running for each position.
One council seat, District 3, has one candidate. Mayor Ralph Hellmich is also unopposed in his bid for re-election.
The District 1 race is between incumbent Wayne Trawick and challenger Barry Hughes.
In District 2, voters will decide between incumbent Vera Quaites, Timothy “Tim” Lower and Donald Barnett.
Larry Engel and Phillip Hinesley are running for the District 4 council seat. District 4 incumbent Rick Blackwell is not running for another term.
District 5, incumbent Charles Ebert III will face Derrick Perdue.
In District 3, Roddy Burkle is the only candidate on the ticket. Incumbent Richard Dayton is not running for re-election due to health issues.
Foley City Council members serve by district. Council members are elected by the voters who live in the district that the candidates are running to represent.

The mayor and council members will serve a four-year term.
